Female, No Microchip

A good Samaritan, Laurie, reached out to our team after she and her neighbors had been seeing a stray dog for at least three weeks roaming through the brush and through yards along Lake Lewisville.

The situation quickly became concerning as it was clear the dog was starving. In an effort to survive, he tragically killed several chickens in the area.

This is a tight-knit community where everyone knows each other, and no one recognizes this dog. She appears to have come out of nowhere, with no known owner coming forward.

We advised Laurie to contact Denton County Animal Control, as they are the first line of response and are responsible for attempting capture. Our team only deploys after all traditional methods have been exhausted.

Given the urgency of the situation and the risk to chickens and livestock, our team will be putting boots on the ground to assess the case, establish logistics, and be prepared to deploy a corral trap and move forward with capture if Animal Control is unsuccessful.

Please see the timeline below for additional details.

CASE TIMELINE

Monday 03/23/26, Animal Control Setup Their Humane Trap

Denton County Animal Control responded to the area and deployed a live humane trap, which has been baited and set. While they do not have the ability to monitor the trap with a live video camera, a nearby homeowner will be checking it periodically throughout the evening.

Tuesday 03/24/26 11:00 ~ Our Team Put Boots on the Ground

Overnight, the dog did not enter Animal Control’s trap for the food. Our team made the decision to deploy to the area to assess the setup, address the baiting of the trap, and set up a live video camera so that we could monitor the trap, his movements, body language, and behavior around it.

Upon arrival, we found a significant amount of ants inside the food placed in the trap. We removed the contaminated food and reset the trap according to our team protocol, including implementing an ant moat beneath the bait to keep it fresh. Dogs will typically avoid food that is compromised by ants, so ensuring clean, accessible bait is critical to a successful capture.

We rebaited Animal Control’s trap with wet canned dog food, a small amount of canned chicken, chopped Vienna sausages, and topped it with plain beef brisket. A small amount of brisket was also placed in an ant-free bowl just outside the trap to help entice him/her to enter for more.

We will give Animal Control’s trap one to two more evenings, depending on his/her behavior around it, before making the decision to transition to our equipment.

Flea Medication & Dewormer Added to Teaser Food

Because we have confirmed that no other animals are stopping by the feeding station, we went ahead and placed Capstar flea medication in the teaser bowl outside the trap to kill adult fleas within minutes, along with a 7-way dewormer.

Beef brisket for the win!  This sweet girl was safely captured in the trap deployed by Denton County Animal Control without incident. On initial assessment, she does not appear to have any pre-existing injuries or wounds. Our team is en route to scan her for a microchip.

*Forward Video to 3m:35s for the trap door closing

No Microchip 😓

No Microchip 😓

While the dog was still secured in the trap, we assisted the homeowner in moving it into the garage to eliminate any risk of escape. We were then able to safely open the trap door and perform multiple full body scans for a microchip. Tragically, none was found.

No Microchip 😓

🖤🩶💚💚💚💚💚💚💚🩶🖤

We want to express our most heartfelt gratitude to Laurie. She is a true animal lover and advocate who didn’t look the other way and created a call to action to get this sweet girl the help she needed. She did not stop until she had reached out to every available resource to ensure this dog would be safely captured. Her compassion and empathy for animals is next level. She gave both our team and Animal Control unlimited access to her property and also took time out of her day to ensure she was fed. Because of her, this sweet girl is now safe.

Transported to the Denton County Animal Shelter

This sweet girl was transported to Denton County Animal Services to complete her 3 day stray hold, allowing any potential family the opportunity to come forward and claim her. If she is not claimed, our team will begin reaching out to partnering rescue organizations to try to secure placement. We will update this page with her intake number as soon as it is obtained.

A very special Thank You to Tonya, Denton County Animal Services Officer for all the work you do!

Please help us help more dogs like her
