Grand Prairie Animal Services requested for our assistance in capturing this elusive girl who has been roaming the area for at least 2 weeks. Animal Control explained to us that they have tried to capture her multiple times but they were unsuccessful. Grand Prairie is outside of our regular service area of Collin County but we do occasionally accept out of area cases when all other capture measures have failed.
Good Samaritans Ava & Dawn at a local business began feeding her and tried to gain her trust over several days but she’s not having it. Our team visited the area, assessed the situation, and we were fortunate enough to get to see her in person ourselves. She is definitely eluding all human contact so we agreed to take her case. We will be conditioning her in preparation for capture in our large corral trap!
Below is her case timeline where we will publish updates in real time!
We setup a video monitored feeding station in an undisclosed location to monitor her eating behaviors and timing so that we can prepare for capture. She was there waiting for Ava and Dawn to put down her food and she ate right away!
Good Samaritan Ava replenished her food for the evening.
She came and ate breakfast this morning. She is still hanging out at the station so we have her right where we want her. We will be planning for our team to deploy to the site for capture within the next 36 hours. 😊
She came back for dinner right on schedule. 🥰
She showed up much earlier this morning for breakfast although she wasn’t very much interested in the dry kibble her Good Samaritans put out for her. She is likely being fed fast food scraps by others in the area who see her and don’t yet know not to feed her, so we’ve asked her Good Samaritans to remove the kibble and only feed her high value and irresistible food in preparation for capture tomorrow.
She has been safely captured! Capture video and more photos coming soon. Officers Reed and Durfee picked her up on scene and transported her to Grand Prairie Animal Services. We are tearing down the corral and will be heading to the shelter to visit her. We will post more pictures of her very soon.
Grand Prairie officers Durfee and Reed picked her up from the capture scene. They were masters at their craft and made it the least stressful as possible getting her loaded into the truck. We are so proud of her and she did so well!
For dogs as scared as her, they can and will bite out of fear. Our goal is to prevent her from having a bite history at all costs. When we initially tried to slip leash her inside the corral, she was a little nippy and communicating her intolerances. When it comes time to transport, it’s important to be patient with them but equally important to operate swiftly and safely. We are very fortunate that she tolerated a double slip leash and that she did not require the use of the catch pole. Sometimes that is absolutely necessary but that is typically used as a last resort because it is more traumatic for them. We are thrilled with how everything went!
When our team arrived at the shelter she was already decompressed so much more. She had already been letting Officer Durfee pet her head. ♥️ Officer Durfee scanned her for a microchip and she does NOT have one.
They vaccinated her, dewormed her, and gave her a flea/tick preventative medicine. They also implanted a microchip ID so she has one now! They wanted to give her a little break so they will test her for heartworms on Monday when she sees their contract Veterinarian.
Her stray hold period is up on Friday and we will be networking her for a Rescue. She needs more time to decompress, rehabilitate to domestic life, and recover from whateve trauma she has endured.
This sweet girl was adopted from Grand Prairie Animal Services on 12/27/2023. They named her Maraca. Normally shelters will get an adoption photo but they did not take one when she was adopted so we don’t have a photo to share.
We wish you the very best life Maraca! We will always love you.
